How Central America is Embracing AI in the Workplace
Central America shows growing interest in AI, with high awareness but limited implementation, marking opportunities for regional growth in technology adoption.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer perceived as a threat to jobs in Central America and Panama. According to the study Leaders in Human Potential: The Most Preferred Companies for Talent in Central America 2024, 76.6% of respondents view Generative AI (GAI) as a tool to enhance their work rather than replace it.
This shift in perception signals how the region’s workforce is embracing this technology, although practical adoption still faces challenges.
High Awareness, Limited Usage
While interest in AI is clear, with 85% of respondents rating their knowledge of the technology as intermediate to advanced, its application in daily work remains limited. Only 27% report frequent use of AI, leaving the majority with minimal or no interaction. This highlights a significant gap between awareness and practical implementation.
Young professionals under 35 are leading the charge in AI usage, with 30.7% reporting high levels of implementation in their roles, surpassing the regional average of 23%. Conversely, managerial positions, despite having greater strategic knowledge, report lower usage, with only 18.5% indicating a high degree of implementation.
Positive Perceptions and Remaining Challenges
Despite progress in viewing AI as a workplace ally, nearly one-third of respondents in Central America remain undecided about whether to see it as a threat or an opportunity. This undecided group could play a pivotal role as regional companies ramp up the adoption of AI-based technologies.
Managerial talent, while recognizing AI’s potential benefits, tends to evaluate its implementation more cautiously, considering factors such as security, operational challenges, and financial resources. In contrast, younger professionals display a more open attitude toward integrating these tools into their work.
The Road Ahead
The AI landscape in Central America reflects a positive transition in the perception of this technology, with young talent and managerial positions exploring its potential. However, practical implementation remains limited, posing a challenge for businesses and professionals across the region.
With increased efforts in training and accessibility, Central America has the opportunity to fully harness the benefits of AI, strengthening its position in the global market.
