What is Software as a Service?
Software as a Service, or SaaS, is a cloud-based model that provides applications to end users through an internet browser. Under this model, providers host services and applications so customers can access them on demand.
Another characteristic of SaaS is that customers generally pay through a subscription or based on usage, rather than purchasing all the functionality at once.
According to Amazon.com, a common example is web-based email, which allows users to send and receive messages without having to manage feature additions to the product or maintain the servers and operating systems on which the software runs.
