Leggal, the Brazilian startup offering legal care as an employee benefit, has raised a $315K pre-seed round led by DOMO.VC, Anjos do Brasil, and a group of angel investors. The company will use the funds to accelerate product development and boost commercial expansion.

The idea behind Leggal dates back to 2017, when founder Diego Battistella lost his father in a car accident in the Netherlands. His sister, a Dutch resident, had access to a legal assistance plan that handled all the procedures, avoiding bureaucracy, stress, and extra costs. This experience inspired Battistella to create a similar model in Brazil.

In 2023, a social media post reaffirmed his vision.

I saw a woman saying she had lost custody of her child and was raising R$20,000 to hire a lawyer. I immediately thought: if she had some kind of legal support, she wouldn’t be going through this,” recalls Battistella.

To bring the idea to life, Battistella partnered with Taiane Fraga Lima, who had extensive experience in employee benefits.

What connected me to the project was the purpose of providing legal access to different social groups. Many people don’t even know their rights. The chance to build something capable of generating real social transformation truly motivated me to be part of Leggal,” she explains.

How the platform works

Leggal uses artificial intelligence and personalized customer service to connect users with specialized lawyers quickly and efficiently. Its model is inspired by the Legal Care trend already consolidated in the United States, where 55% of Fortune 500 companies provide legal support as a benefit. In Brazil, the potential market for this service exceeds $3.6 billion (R$20 billion).

Currently, over 30,000 users actively use the platform, and the startup expects to reach 80,000 by the end of the year.

A solution for a market in need

Despite being the country with the highest number of lawyers per capita, one professional for every 168 inhabitants, Brazil faces a paradox. A Datafolha survey reveals that 44% of lawyers earn less than R$2,500 per month, while millions of people cannot access proper legal assistance.

According to Leggal, 80% of its users had never consulted a lawyer before joining the platform. This demonstrates the urgency of democratizing access to legal services and reframing legal care as an essential part of organizational well-being.

Our goal is to normalize what today is the exception: that people consult a lawyer with the same ease as they see a doctor. If you feel a symptom, you book an appointment. With legal matters, it should be the same,” says Fraga Lima.
